Day 819
I was smiling this morning as I looked at my young boys and thought about how far they’d come! Life certainly is easier now that they are maturing so quickly. I DO miss the two-legged baby and toddler stage and the four-legged crazy puppy times, but each year brings a new age to love.
Running a few errands today, I was witness to two very different parenting styles. One toddler was in full-on tantrum mode and anyone within hearing distance knew his mama had already lost her battle. After threats and an angry command or two, she dragged the little guy out of the store. Not only did she lose, but her child learned nothing.
At another store, the same scenario was building, but the parent remained calm and didn’t raise his voice. He placed the object of desire firmly back on the shelf and told his little guy “NO." The child sniffed, gave one more whine and then followed his parent out the door.
The difference in these two interactions might have been past experiences with their children. On the surface, it did seem to be the parenting style. One was angry and demanding while the other parent was calm and firm. They both exited the store, but one of them left with a shred of pride remaining.
My two buddies might push the envelope now and then, but both will give in when they know I am asking them to do the right thing.
From infancy to our senior years, we all need boundaries, expectations and love. If an interaction lacks any one of those factors, things can spiral quickly,
I love every age of dogs and children and embrace the joys of each stage. I wouldn’t want to go back, but the future can hold off for a bit. I am happy to experience the blessings found in today.
