Day 998

It’s no secret that we love to visit our seniors when Therapy Dogging! Of course, we go to other venues, but all of us (two and four-legged) are drawn to the elderly. Today, I took a moment to understand that pull.

Even among our senior citizens, there are certainly some glowing stars. Starting with those who shine the brightest, I tried to capture their compelling essence.

Don, our beloved Harmonica Man: His stories from WWII are riveting, but his philosophy of life makes him truly part of my heart. He has taught me to be more accepting, forgiving and faithful.

Sonny, my “adopted brother”: This man has taught me that family can be without any particular heritage. Accepting his invitation to be his little sister brings me joy. His care-taking of anyone in need continues to open my own eyes to others who might need a helping hand.

Gloria…sweet Gloria: This Southern Belle is unable to do the things she loves. Riddled with arthritis, she ALWAYS finds something to be thankful for. She has taught me gratitude for those things I might miss.

Tom, a gentle giant of a man: His struggles would diminish most, yet he still reaches out to make sure it is well with my heart. Reminding me of my own father, his kindness, empathy and sincerity forge a path for me to follow.

With all four, when we part, we exchange the words, “I love you”… and we mean it from the heart.

So many people tell us how wonderful it is for us to take the time to visit the elderly. I thank them, but secretly know that the true gift comes to me with every encounter.
