Day 955

When I walk my Goldens, there are many things to consider before heading out the door. First, and foremost, is the order and pairings.

Sam almost always goes first and SOLO! Training (Sammy) and concentration on staying upright (ME), when the Zoomies strike, is critical!

Gus is next! Sometimes he goes by himself, but other times he gets to walk with Ranger. Oh! He loves walking with his big brother! The two of them are a delightful, manageable pair!

Lilly always goes last. Mostly, she walks alone so she can sniff to her heart’s delight. Other times, she is accompanied by her brother Ranger. Either way, our girl is slowing down a bit and patience is required. Just today, her walk had me stopping numerous times and also found me slowing my pace for our senior girl.

I vividly remember walking next door as a teenager to accompany my Nanny back to The Big White House for dinner. She was in her 90’s and would apologize for walking slowly. I would hold on tighter and savor the moment saying, “when I was little, I know you didn’t ask me to walk a bit faster!” We would continue our journey with memories flooding our hearts.

Realizing that I am a “mover and shaker," it is challenging for me to slow down. When it comes to accomplishing tasks, I take NO prisoners! However, when it comes to my senior friends, little ones and older pups, my patience knows no bounds. Slowing down for them is simply part of what my heart tells me to do.

When those around us need to move at a more gentle speed, it is a natural, loving response to match their pace. As we take their hand or hold the leash, it is an honor to simply spend those moments together. Whether it is age, injury, disability or even sadness that makes our loved ones move with moderation, the human spirit will slow our own steps to support those who need us. It is a gift we offer that costs nothing, but the rewards are beautiful…for everyone.
