Day 883

While my Goldens ran around the gazebo, Mac and I toted large pieces of plexiglass into that structure to begin preparing for winter. Almost everyone had a good time…well, at least the Goldens did!

Hanging the heavy plastic over the screens was about 85% successful! Of course, the last window was the challenge! As we worked, I told my work buddy (Mr. Mac) of a similar story from long ago.

Throughout my life, I was my beloved dad’s shadow. When it came time to place plexiglass windows over our screens at the family cabin, I was right there to help. We carried them into the porch and began the process of lifting them into position and then securing the beasts. The last sheet was extra long and heavy! Lifting it into position, somehow it slipped and fell to the floor…well almost. Unfortunately, my flip flop-clad toes were the recipient of the glass! My dad was horrified and apologetic. I assured him that it was not his fault in the least! Fighting back tears, I helped secure that last piece into place. When we congratulated each other on a successful endeavor, Dad went to play solitaire and I went into my bedroom to check the damage. Four extremely bruised toes met my eyes (The pinky was spared.). It turned out they were all broken! How did I react with a calm demeanor and humor? I loved my dad that much.

It is fascinating that our reactions depend on the person present. When we love someone so much, we think of them first and foremost. Pain, sadness, anger and other unpleasant emotions can be camouflaged with a smile. After the crescendo of the moment, of course, those most loved are the ones we can calmly turn to for comfort.

The dogs are in and the windows are mostly up. No broken toes today! If there had been a repeat, I would have attempted to grin and bear it…at least initially! Knowing I have Mac and four Goldens to soothe my pain always makes every thing better!
