Day 853
There are a multitude of surprises that greet the eyes of the Goldens at the cottage. Some come by way of smells wafting toward the deck while others are he sounds of wildlife in the distance. However, it seems that “sight” is their favorite mode of experiencing Lake Life! Today, our resident white squirrel was the high point of their day!
This little guy appears often to perform for its avid audience. Although the pups will raise a ruckus for neighborhood dogs, people who dare to walk by their fence or, Heaven forbid, choose to knock on the door, the White Squirrel brings on a hushed reverence. They simply stare with their tongues hanging out as they attempt to place this being in their limited categorization system.
It is a thrill to see unique things in nature. A shooting star, a brewing thunderstorm, the Northern Lights or a white squirrel will make one stop and gaze in wonder. This furry friend certainly captures my undivided attention until he scampers out of sight! They are said to be harbingers of good fortune. I like to think that is true!
Giving only a slight nod to superstitious things in life, I still hesitate when a black cat appears to run in front of me. I think of my parents when I pick up a penny on the sidewalk and I still cross my fingers for good luck. Like the white squirrel, who is thought to bring good luck to college students on test days, I still lean heavily on making things happen myself. Studying for an exam, embracing the sight of a shooting star for its beauty and picking up that coin to add to my bank account are all part of my rational nature. However, I have been known to make a wish on that star, feel the luck embedded in a discovered coin and embrace the chance encounter of a white squirrel during my day. Even if it’s only a myth, it can’t hurt…right?
