Day 854
At the “Tail End” of our month-long doggy ailments ( hot spots, ear/eye infections, UTI, intestinal issues…), our Sammy is the last one who is finally on the mend! Today, in a package addressed to Sammy MacKechnie, was a “Get Well Stuffy” for our boy. No card, no return address… just his new, beloved hedgehog.
How many times, on life's journey, do we offer a gift without hoping to get some kind of recognition? Whether delivering food or flowers, mailing a card, bringing a wedding gift or any other offerings, most of us feel good when our deed is acknowledged. Even my Goldens get treats when they visit! Although the goal in doing kind acts is not the appreciation or gratitude from the recipient, it always feels good to witness the person’s appreciation. That is not a bad thing…warming someone’s heart makes us happy.
However, how many times in our lives do we simply surprise another without a thought of receiving any kudos for the deed? Altruism is a rare thing indeed. In part, this is because when we do kind deeds, we are most often in the presence of the person who is the recipient. Just anonymously scattering good deeds around is tricky!
I, for one, am going to be more aware of those good deeds offered without any thought of reciprocity. Altruism is my goal and my Goldens can lead the way! Other than an occasional dog treat, they make the world a better place by simply breathing!
PS Sammy would like to thank his gift giver. He will snuggle it up to his “rather deformed” one that he chewed up by mistake! He already loves you!
