Day 822
Our Goldens have a few beloved chew bones that they hoard when possible. Miss Lilly has the favorite, most desired tucked under her as she slumbers. Much like a dragon, guarding its gold, nobody disturbs the sleeping beast. Her treasure remains secure.
When I was little, we didn’t have tornado sirens, but relied on the radio (WCCO) to inform us of impending storms. Our first line of defense, however, was my father. He had seen tornadoes in his life and knew when to head for safety. Standing out on the driveway, eyes scanning the frightening sky, I knew he would keep us safe.
When it was time, Dad would gently say, “Why don’t you grab your most important treasures and then we will all head to the basement.” My “treasures” consisted of my stuffed animal (Brownie), my piggy bank, my Bible (for good measure) and our Maltese dog, Becky. Down the big basement stairs our family would go with our most important belongings in our arms.
Looking back, I smile at my valuables and the shortlist of what I found worthy of protecting. Things haven’t changed all that much through the years. What was kept close to my heart then still remains the same.
*Brownie: something that brought comfort
*Money: having enough for a rainy (stormy) day
*My Bible: faith is a beautiful thing.
*My family: those we hold dear
*Becky: dogs are part of the family.
I can’t think of too much more to add to the list. Lilly would be content with simply being near her people…and also having the coveted bone tucked beside her…just in case!
