Day 809

Where you lead...I will follow! These two are often in cahoots with one another! Asher is The Idea Man and Sam is his faithful companion. They delight me!

Most of us might admit to being more of a follower in our lives when we look back on all of our relationships. I would certainly fall into that category. Growing up, I followed my sister, my friends and anyone else who had an idea for fun or adventure. Being satisfied with my "follower status" never stopped me from enjoying life!

Above my "follower" tendencies in the early years, I was, first and foremost, a Rule Follower. One example would be my fifth grade experience at Lincoln Elementary. One of the leaders of our class passed a message around the room telling all of us to drop our pencil at exactly 2:10. The successful prank was followed by giggles and a very unhappy Mrs. Carlson who warned us to NEVER do anything like again! Soon, another note came along (carefully being passed up and down the rows). This one told us to fall onto the floor at 2:20! Follow my peers or follow my teacher??? Mrs. Carlson won in my mind by a landslide! At 2:20, the entire class fell to the floor...except for yours truly and one other girl. The principal was called and Mr. Lester took recess away from the entire class for an entire week...except for the two who stayed seated! I am not sure there were any winners in that scenario, but I learned a lesson. Even though I had lost a few points with my fellow 5th graders, there were times when following the crowd was not a good choice!

As adults, once again, most of us "go with the flow," but we all have a similar "Mrs. Carlson Lesson" in our past. From those teachings we have learned that there are times to lead or simply not follow. Those two choices come in handy when that little voice in your head tells you, "I wouldn't!"

Following GOOD leaders usually ends on a positive note. Leading GOOD followers also tends to end well. Otherwise, experiences can end with NO RECESS...and nobody wants that! As for Sam and Asher, that partnership needs to be monitored closely until SOMEBODY...ANYBODY gets a little older!
