Day 784
Dreams come to us whether we want them or not. Some dreams are wonderful while others can be disconcerting at best.
The Goldens certainly dream! Observing them, during their REM sleep, I try to watch for any distress in order to gently wake them. Mostly, they seem to slumber with happy dreams of paws churning, quiet barking and smiling. I wish I knew what dogs dream of!
For me, I can do without the ones where I fall off a cliff, lose control of the car or lose something precious. However, I do cherish the dreams that find me visiting with a loved one who has passed on.
Years ago, we were designing an avenue for the pups to safely access the backyard. We were walking them outside, down the stairs and around to the gate...rain, snow, middle of the night, you name it! Try as we might, it looked like a total revamp of the back entrance. After we had discussed options for weeks, I had a dream. My sweet father sat next to me and drew out a blueprint for a doggy door and ramp/steps. It was the perfect answer and the perfect dream. When I woke up, I still felt his presence.
We now have that doggy door and it has been amazing! The pups are safe and we are able to let them out with a cup of coffee in hand. I am grateful for that dream and smile when I think of my dad pointing out (and designing) the easiest solution to our problem.
There are many who believe we receive visits from those who have passed on in our dreams...I like that thought. As my Goldens sleep at my feet, I wonder if they are visiting with someone from their past. A twitching paw, slight wag of the tail and the calm rise and fall of their chests lets me know their dreams are good ones. I wish I knew what, or who, they are visiting in the sleep that brings such peace and happiness.
