Day 783

Our Lilly can be a finicky eater at times. She is offered chicken, turkey, Blissful Belly and a host of other enticing temptations, but some days, she just turns up her nose at my attempts. Interestingly enough, when her brothers show up, she often decides her meal is quite edible!

Two perspectives are evident in this situation. First, Lilly seems to realize that her meal is quite desirable, as evidenced by her drooling brothers and, secondly, the boys covet what is not their treasure. The stand off, created by that bowl of delight, ended as planned. Lilly ate and the boys wandered away.

It is often said that we don't know what we have until we lose it. Certainly jobs, health, relationships, along with a host of other things that can be lost, would fall into that category. Practicing gratitude throughout the day helps with the appreciation portion, but once there is a loss, it is hard to go back and feel thankful. For me, moving forward with gratitude is the only way. Bitterness and regret only dilute the beautiful gifts still in your life.

As for desiring something that is not your own... that's another story. We all see people with things we would like for ourselves. Cars, trips, health...the list would make Santa cringe. Practicing empathy works for me. I look at the person and feel their excitement and joy. If that doesn't quell my desire, then I make a plan of how to add it to my life. Hard work and creativity can often bring something into your own life that you have wanted.

Whether you are "eating at the bowl" or drooling as you watch the 'food' disappear, take a moment to count your blessings. In my life, I don't think I could count that high!
