Day 708

Today is a special day! Our Asher turns 6! It's hard to believe it was that long ago when we all stood anxiously around as, suddenly, one more person appeared in the room to love

The dogs welcomed this new family member right away. A few sniffs, a lick or two and he was part of the pack. They also enjoyed the buffet that appeared under his high chair on a daily basis!

My little buddy and I have gone from me marveling at his tiny hands to, "Hey, Nanny! Watch me throw this rock into the river!" Where did those years go? I always try to be in the moment with my grandson, but that hasn't helped to slow our precious time together.

Today, at Mercy, many people asked about Ranger's age. When I responded with him approaching eleven, the stories of elder dogs flooded out of their hearts. Some sad, some humorous, all heartfelt, each story brought a smile or a tear.

Those in our care, be they beloved pets, grandchildren or even aging parents, are cherished and protected. It seems that their need of us makes us love them even more. The fleeting time we are able to care for them is a gift like no other. What treasured seasons of love.

So, today, we get to celebrate our Asher, who is on the cusp of an independence of sorts. He still needs us, but his little world is expanding rapidly. That is as it should be. In the meantime, this Nanny plans to soak up every moment!
