Day 706

Gus does not like to be alone! Perhaps it is due to his sight disability, but he must always be with a two or four-legged family member. Whether going outside, into the next room or jumping in the car, he refuses to venture forth without the knowledge that someone will be right there.

Humans seem to be "Pack Members" as well. Attending functions, eating at restaurants and a host of other activities seem to be more enjoyable with a friend or two. As for me, I love spending my adventures with others. When all is said and done, being able to reminisce with a loved one is pretty special.

The "remember when's" are so meaningful to share in years to come. Some of those moments make you laugh or bring a tear to your eye. All are special.

Today at church, I suddenly recognized the daughter of a senior resident from the past who meant so much. She was a guest pianist, so it took a moment to place her. After the service, I walked towards her and found tears in my eyes as I remembered so many special times with our sweet Audrey. Back in the 'Arthur days,' this elderly lady was his absolute favorite. I remembered when she would save part of her lunch for the big Golden and how he would put his big, old head in her lap. Before she passed, the family asked us to stop by to say goodbye. Arthur and I arrived and sat by her bed. I remember stroking her arm as Arthur licked her hand.

All these years later, Audrey is gone, but the memories of our time together still surface with love. Even though she is not here for the 'remember when's, I am the keeper of our time together and our memories live on within my heart.

Being alone has some lovely benefits, but my favorite times are with others. Gus and I have so many things in common. Being with someone else nearby is important to both of us. Looking in those brown eyes, I told him he never has to be alone in The Big White House. He looked back and scooted a little bit closer to my foot. Perhaps that was his way of telling me that I have him to keep me company as well. Sweet boy...
