Day 695

'The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence!'. That couldn't be more true for Lilly and Ranger! Within their big, fenced-in yard, we have added a white picket fence to protect the gazebo area from any "surprises" that might be stepped in. The bunnies (who live under the gazebo) are in full agreement with this arrangement. We call this space The Secret Garden.

Most of the time, all four Goldens sniff the air and look longingly through the pickets. However, there are times when they are allowed to experience that tauntingly wonderful green grass on the other side!

In my younger years, I recall seeing "greener grass" now and then. Other people's vacations, brand new homes, talents and a host of other delights were viewed as something my situation could not afford or accommodate. Not exactly jealous of others' lives, but slightly green from time-to-time, I wished for things not within my reach.

The older I got, the less I noticed taking in the view on the other side of the fence. My own grass began to take on a wonderful greenish hue as the years passed. Finding myself genuinely happy for friends and family who found success, my own yard looked mighty fine to me.

In the long run, it is not the possessions or experiences that touch the heart... it's the love we feel for family and friends (dogs too) that make our yards beautifully green. Lilly and Ranger would agree, but it better be the view from INSIDE the Secret Garden!
