Day 677
It is my understanding that today is National Puppy Day. Seeing absolutely adorable pictures of 'puppies' on social media, I decided to share one of my own. During the photo shoot, Lilly's picture stood out. Approaching eleven in June, she is no longer a puppy, but will always be one to me...they all are.
Senior dogs are a different blessing and challenge. Trained, calm and an extension of myself, now we are aware of slower walks, more patience and an appreciation of each day with them... every one a gift.
A very dear and special friend, Charlean, has opened her home to senior dogs who need love, care, safety and the special bond created by her special passion for these "oldies." Old Barkers Farm Senior Sanctuary for Dogs is a place where these elders sometimes find their best months or years. She provides them with everything an elder dog could want. However, because of the nature of her passion, she has to say goodbye quite often. Every time she holds a paw as her "puppy" heads to the Rainbow Bridge, a hole appears in her heart. (Special love to her sweet boxer, Dembe, who made the journey yesterday.) She then prepares to fill that hole by opening her door and heart to another senior. Each dog who leaves becomes a part of her heart. Someday, that heart will be 'All Dog'...what a beautiful thing that will be.
To puppies young and old, Happy National Puppy Day! To those who are lucky enough to receive that puppy love, you are lucky indeed. For those, like our friend Charlean, who open their hearts to the 'puppies who need the most love and care,' Happy Puppy Day to you...after all, the more dogs who fill your heart, the closer you are to being doglike...full of love, compassion, trust and devotion. You are a gift to this world.
