Day 502
After a wonderful, memorable day at the cottage, both Lilly and Ranger are exhausted! They spent yesterday running, playing, loving and taking in crisp, fresh air. Today, they are dragging just a bit. The thunderstorms didn't help either.
Realizing these twins are ten and counting, we try to honor their senior status. Slower walks, more time in the sun and helping them to access cars, beds and any other "jumping opportunity", is the name of the game these days. We don't mind at all...it is an honor to have these sweet souls in our lives.
Speaking of slowing down, my third walk was with our two seniors this morning and I was glad for their slow pace. After last night's RUN to beat the storms, a gentle meander was a welcome change. Sam and Gus are in training mode on our walks, but Lilly and Ranger are simply enjoying the moment.
As for me, there are times when my actual number of years on earth shock me! Most days, my brain feels about 29 and I face the day with that number in mind. Other days, especially when doing yard work, garage cleaning or some other arduous task, I acknowledge my decades of wear and tear. Even though it is somewhat frustrating to acquiesce to almost seven decades on the planet, it is nice to use my age as an excuse from time to time. Mind you, I never use it to get out of anything...only for my own peace (and pace).
Aging is a gift that is not given to many. Not taking that lightly, I am thankful for every year, day and moment bestowed upon me. When my legs tell me that 20,000 steps is a bit much day-after-day, I allow myself to slow down. Hauling huge rocks, rollerblading and mountain biking might be in the rearview mirror, but the memories are rich and beautiful. Now, there are new memories to make at a slightly slower pace. These are amazing in their own right. Perhaps they are savored just a bit more than the more active one of yesterday.
However, those who know me best, still keep an eye on those rollerblades. There might just be a ride or two in my future. Also, there will be a large number of landscape rocks finding their way to my yard soon...maybe just a bit smaller than boulders this time!
