Day 365

When I began this writing journey, I only planned to compose a few stories now and then. It has taken on a life of its own and today marks the 365th consecutive day of posting!

Looking back on the past year, it has been rich with new friends, amazing experiences and lots of Golden Love. Having documented our "Walks" is such a testament to the joy and comfort the Goldens bring to so many.

Lilly has been the most active at Walker Senior Residence since she has a bit of trouble jumping into the car. Even though we purchased a ramp, it has been easier to simply walk down to visit with our friends a few blocks away. She has become so very close to a number of residents and brings Golden love with every visit. As I recall the visits she enjoys the most, it happens to be all men! Don, Sonny, Dave...the list goes on and on. Along with her connections to these amazing gentlemen, Lilly has allowed them to enter my heart as well. We have gone from "See you next week...take care!" to "You are so special in our lives. We love you!." What an incredible addition to my life.

Ranger has been trotting the halls at Mercy Hospital where he seems to be the favorite of the four Golden Therapy Dogs at this venue. It might be because he was featured on television a few times, but I choose to believe it emanates from his strong personality and loving ways. Just today, our Volunteer Coordinators asked us to let them know of special connections during our visits. It seems they have a bulletin board for the dogs and would love to share their most memorable exploits. I will comply, but Ranger could have his own display every week. He encounters tears, fear, anxiety and other needs and approaches all in the same way...lean in and let the person feel the love. He has helped nurses in tears, end-of-life individuals and their families, doctors who are having a bad day and so many others. Every time, I hear the same sentiment. "I needed this today. Thank you for being here."

Ranger has also touched a few lives over at Oxbow where he reads with little people. When we walk down the hallway, we hear soft voices calling his name and a few who run over just to touch him. Staff have now become connected and treats are kept in the most surprising places! We love our time there!

Gus and Sam continue their "education" and will be helping their elders slowly enter retirement in a year or two. Both boys are full of love for people and already show empathy and caring when we personally need their love. They will be great Therapy Dogs!

As for me, I maintain that I am only at the other end of the leash. I couldn't do this by myself. Watching the magic that transpires with each Golden interaction is a privilege and honor. My dogs humble me and share endless lessons of love and compassion as I am witness to their beautiful ways. There is a saying, in the form of a prayer, that is truth:

"Please let me be the person my dog thinks I am."

That is my goal in life.
