Day 352
My senior friends are some of the most special people in my life. Their wisdom, patience, caring and history are all part of their charm. Lilly usually goes along to visit our friends at Walker and she loves each and every one.
Most of our aged friends don't have a lot to give away anymore. Allowing these seniors to share their stories is one of the only gifts they can offer. Listening to these stories is our gift to them. In the distant past, I might have grown restless or impatient when an elder would tell a story I had heard many times. Now, I feel so differently about the retellings...
Senior: "Have I told you the story of how we met?"
Me: "Yes, you have, but it is one of my favorites. Please tell me again."
Senior: "Back when I was young, we lived on the farm and everyone had to work hard...not like young people today!"
Me: "I can't even imagine how that was for you! I admire it so much! Please tell me a story about your childhood."
Senior: "When I went to school, there was a one-room schoolhouse, with one teacher. We didn't have all the luxuries kids have today. We learned just fine without all of that nonsense!"
Me: "I admire the way you were educated and know people who were incredibly successful with that kind of schooling! I believe your education was an amazing one! Today's children do have more luxuries, but it seems to be a sign of the times in education. People have always wanted the best for their children...even now!"
So, the stories flow. I hear memories of love, loss, war, childhoods of long ago and anything they have tucked away in their hearts. Today, one of my dearest friends shared the story of losing his beloved wife of almost 70 years. His eyes took on a far-off look and tears were evident. He needed to share it with me today and, when he was done, he said, "I haven't thought about that for a long time. Thank you for listening."
My eyes, full of tears, looked into his misty eyes and we just smiled at each other for a beautiful moment in time. What a gift to be the trusted recipient of these stories. Each one makes my heart grow a little bigger and deeper.
