Day 334
4/15/23
Just when we all thought it was safe to say farewell to winter and snow, it is about to rear its ugly head once again!!! Due to the rain today, there were few “play dates” out in the backyard for Gus and Sam. All of the Goldens were depressed!
Not only is the forecast predicting snow (2 to 4 inches), but the rivers are flooding! Asher and I walked down to the Rum River yesterday to see if it had spilled over the banks. We were not disappointed with our prediction. The “Hey Nanny” questions were fast and furious. It was many complicated explainations for a four-year-old, but I believe he got the main points.
As a child, I recall taking the same walk towards the river, but we could not get that close. My dad and I headed down the road from the Christian Hill area and could only travel less than two blocks. With our feet on dry land, I remember feeling that, somehow, reality had left. There were two blocks of homes with the water lapping at their first story windows and BOATS paddling down the streets! Even though I was less than ten, I recall feeling so sorry for the people who lived in those homes. What a mess!
April, in Minnesota, is anything but predictable! It is almost as if the month feels compelled to sample each and every season of the year. Winter with the snow, spring with the rains, summer with unexpected heat and even autumn with the dead leaves on the ground all seem to shove and bicker over who is in charge. My vote would be for spring to just take over and tell the other seasons to wait their turn.
For now, we turn the air-conditioning off again and return to heating our homes. We put away the spring jackets and grab our hats and mittens once again. We also look longingly out the window for dry days, warm sunshine and sprouting greenery. We know it will come to stay, but we almost have to experience the shifts in the seasons to truly appreciate the beauty that is just around the corner!
Poor Gus, Sammy, Ranger and Lilly will just have to wait a few more days until they can enjoy their favorite outdoor, springtime activities…
Ranger: Rolling on his back in the grass.
Lilly: Sitting by the gate waiting to counsel any dog who dares walk by.
Sam and Gus: Being absolutely crazy with their running and wrestling.
They will survive! After all, they ARE Minnesota Goldens!
