Day 229
12/30/22
Family can take many forms. Lilly and Ranger are actual siblings, but Gus and Sam are still their brothers. It seems you don't have to have the same lineage to love your group called "family."
Tonight, I had the distinct joy of sharing moments with many of the people who are considered my family. Starting at our house for a dose of the Farrier Coffee Cake (handed down through generations), we then headed out to dinner with over fifteen of my favorite people. Mac asked me how many of them were actual "blood relatives" and I had to really stop and think. Not even half of the gathered members were directly linked to my heritage, yet all are family.
What is family then, if not actual family tree members? Well, some are found on my family tree while others have married in or adopted in. The beauty of my husband's question was that it was not a quick, easy answer! In the end, it didn't really matter because they are all family to me.
Now for that Farrier Coffee Cake recipe that has been a secret for generations!
The base is rather complicated, but you can use any frozen sweet dough from the store. Spread it in cake pans and let it rise.
When it has doubled in height, take a spoon and press it into the dough to make dents throughout.
Next, pour Half and Half in the holes (or cream, if your sweet tooth is over-active).
Fill the Half and Half holes with LOTS of sugar! Do not scrimp!
Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes or until brown.
Serve warm, cold or room temperature. Butter is always a welcome addition!
When I was a little girl, my Nanny and Mom would make this amazing creation. There were certainly many pieces that had better chunks of the sugar concoction than others. We would first examine the plate and they vie for the best pieces! I carried on the tradition and my own children would seek the premiere piece!
Tonight, my "family" reminisced and laughed about those memories. Stories were told about devious ways of being the recipient of the most treasured piece.
Family is just that simple.
Love,
Laughter,
Memories,
Shared experiences,
Caring,
Acceptance
And for us...the Farrier Coffee Cake!
