Day 15

Today was a big day for Gus! He actually went on a trial run as a Therapy Dog. Now, I haven't had a lot of faith in his future in this line of work, but today he seemed to show some promise!

I have recently had the great honor and joy of reconnecting with one of my teachers from high school. He and his wife live at our wonderful, residential home for seniors just down the street. Back in 1972, this man struck terror into my heart! He seemed formidable, unreachable and down right scary! Fast forward to 2017 when we met on a Therapy Dog visit and now I see him as wry, intelligent, caring and so very likeable...dare I say loveable!

I know we have both added a few years to our journey and experiences, trials and life in general can mold a person but I believe in my heart that he is the same man as he was in 1972! He looks much the same, his voice hasn't changed, but his eyes hold a kindness and beauty I totally missed back in high school.

The couple needed a ride today and I had mentioned that my husband or I would gladly drive them to any appointment or event. I had my grandson with me, so sweet Mac took the wheel. I knew the couple had met my husband at least once, but I walked down, with a four-year-old holding one hand as my other held a leash. Gus was chosen for this walk because I share so many stories about our crazy boy whenever I visit and I knew they would be delighted!

We all converged at the front door of the establishment. Our car, my trio and two lovely people using walkers. I held my breath as they encountered Gus, but I had no need to worry. He sat very still, his one good eye sizing them up, and decided to simply turn on the charm. He was perfect! Even after they left in the car, a few employees came by to meet him. Once again, perfect angel!

Comparing my teacher to my puppy couldn't be avoided at this moment. Expectations we place on others are not always based on their true nature. My friend (yes, we are good friends now) has shown me his true character, which probably was there all along. Gus, well Gussie is just a character at heart...but it is a very good heart!
