Day 14

5/25/22

Today all three goldens shared their love! Even Gus had his moment to shine!

First, Ranger went back to our favorite senior residence establishment. Of course, he charmed the staff and residents who were milling about. I just love it when their beautiful, worn hands reach out to touch the silky coat and their eyes soften with fond memories. It is rare to meet someone who doesn't share about a beloved dog from their past. Ranger simply stands near them, soaking in the love and attention.

We headed up to see our favorite WWll friend and walked down memory lane for a bit. He talked about a mutual friend (we met this lady through our beloved senior) who had adopted him after losing her parent in memory care. Our friend had said good-bye to his sweet wife shortly before and it seemed both were at a loss. This young...well, she's younger than me... lady came to visit him one day and asked if he could be her father now, since she had no parents. He agreed and the two talk almost every day. She calls or visits to read to him and he shares his life stories and his amazing harmonica performances. They both give from their hearts.

Ranger and I met some newer residents and all welcomed us with warmth and anticipation. Having my sidekick seems to make our visits personal from the start. One lady talked about the son she had recently lost while another shared about the search for relief from pain. It amazes me to walk into an apartment or room and instantly become a confidant and trusted friend. Ranger allows them to give from their hearts.

Next, Lilly and Ranger went for a walk in the drizzle. Lilly connected with a fellow walker and sidled up to lean against this lady. My empath can always tell when someone needs her. Before we knew it, this older traveler was petting our Lilly and talking about her treatments for cancer. She opened right up as if we had known each other for years. Lilly allows others to share from their hearts.

Finally, our young Gus helped me save a senior golden retriever later in the day. We found this sweet, old girl walking towards the river, trailing her chain behind her. Our pup started with a play bow, which gave me enough time to grab the chain and calm the situation down. I headed for a home where an older golden has lived for years. Ringing the doorbell and holding my breath, we all waited for someone to come to the door. Finally, a woman opened it a crack and said, "Where did you find her? I wonder how she got away!" I explained and then she started talking about what a rough time they have had in the last year or so. She allowed that the dog was in real need of grooming. I took a leap of faith and told her if they ever felt overwhelmed by caring for this sweet 12-year-old golden, I would take her in a heartbeat. She said she thought they could take care of her but would keep it in mind. Gus and I turned to leave. I paused for a moment and told her, "I meant what I said. You know where I live. I will take her without a second thought. No questions or judgment." She tied her back up and I cried all the way home.

I have had a dream to start a home for senior goldens who are misplaced for no reason of their own. Poor babies who need to be loved for the time they have left. I even have a name..."Golden Oldies" Someday...
