Day 1066
This girl is devoid of energy right now …she gave it ‘her all’ at Walker today! Having grown close to a number of residents at that facility, today we were asked to attend a Hospice intake meeting. I was honored.
Introductions were made and then all eyes went to Lilly. She was walking around introducing herself to the two newcomers when she heard her name. Stopping in mid-sniff, she turned around and smiled as if announcing the meeting could begin now.
This was a first for me with a Therapy Dog as my escort and it was humbling. At one point, I noticed that our dear friend was a bit teary, so Lilly and I flew into action. While I stood by with my arm around his shoulders, Lilly “snuffled and nudged” until his smile returned. She knew just what was needed.
Hospice is a wonderful organization, in my opinion. They offer so many options for comfort of the mind, body and soul. When my own dad entered Hospice at home, it was so hard for me to accept. However, through the months, the Hospice Care-Givers offered our entire family such love and support. They made sure he ate and then focused on our meal. They massaged his sore muscles and then turned to us to rub aching backs. When tears threatened, hugs were offered. In the last few days, two of our favorites chose to do twelve-hour shifts so they could be near dad and offer their loving support. They were angels.
Going into this meeting for my sweet friend, I carried all of that memorable love with me. The women who met us were wonderful, warm and loving. I knew, from experience, that this was a good move for everyone.
So, Lilly and I checked off another “Life Box.” I wouldn’t want to do it every day, but it was an honor and a gift to be included as ‘family.’
When we left, I hugged our dear man and said, “Now, this doesn’t mean you get to leave us any time soon! We love you and still need you in our lives for a long time!”
He smiled, patted Lilly on the head and said, “I love you too, and I am not planning on going anywhere soon!”
