Day 1034

Trust is so hard to earn and so easy to lose. Since we have been doing our fair share of doggy doctoring lately, it amazes me that our Goldens continue to trust us at all! We hand their leash to a stranger, who takes them through a doorway to administer procedures that cannot be much fun. Yet, when they return, they do not have any issues with trusting us. They fly into our waiting arms and never doubt our love. Of course, we are doing all of this for their own good snd I hope, somewhere in their hearts, they know!

Humans have a much more difficult time when trust is betrayed. In fact, betrayal seems to send tendrils deeply into our hearts and it resides there without any plan for vacating. Perhaps it is a survival response, but it packs a powerful emotion!

Most everyone has experienced betrayal at some level. As I have walked down the road towards wisdom (It’s still a long way off!), I have concluded that it is alright to close a door or two. It is never in my heart to retaliate or wish ill on another, but closing a door to separate myself from toxic individuals seems like the healthy, intelligent course of action. If you burn your finger on the stovetop, why would you take a second attempt to see if it will burn you again.

When you really trust someone, it takes years to build that bond. That is a true gift indeed. A few bumps along the road can sometimes be forgiven and forgotten. Trust is like that. We have that bond with our pups and it is a beautiful thing that we honor each day.
