Day 1010

Today was the day WCCO (CBS) met us at Mercy Hospital to film a segment celebrating Ranger’s 500th therapy dog visit. We walked the halls, answered questions and even brought the reporter to the house to meet the entire “Halo of Goldens”. It was an experience, but the real event happened before we shook the reporter’s hand.

Walking through the door to Volunteer Services, we came to a halt to see another beautiful Golden standing in front of us. This was no ordinary pup, but one dear to so many hearts. Sweet Gunnar has terminal cancer and, at age four, only comes to life when he is “Therapy Dogging”. Just yesterday, I had reached out to his mama to show support and ask if I could help in any way. Ranger and I had trained the team at Mercy just about a year ago, so we know them well.

We were there for the interview and Gunnar was there to say goodbye to some of the staff who love him. Neither of us was scheduled to be there, yet there we stood. We stood there for a minute and then both of us started to cry. Ranger, who is often wary of other dogs, went right up and nuzzled him…he knew.

People often ask about my perspective when we volunteer, but today, it was about the dogs. Gunnar’s only joy comes from being at Mercy. His fans have showered him with hugs, kisses and stuffies. He finds positive energy that overrides his pain. He loves serving.

Ranger somehow knew that his friend was sick. Snuggling up to him with “head hugs” was his way of saying, “ It’s OK, my friend. I am here.” Both tails were wagging the entire time.

We were meant to meet this day. Gunnar joined the interview, creating a memory that will be cherished by his mama.

The best part of the entire day was the serendipitous meeting of two beautiful Golden souls. We knew this was meant to be. It was a gift.
