Day 1003

Valentine's Day is right around the corner…a day focused on love. Most of us are surrounded by any number of people who share a mutual affection, but there are some who are not as fortunate.

Gus and I made the rounds to visit our senior friends this morning. At one stop, we walked in to find a box of chocolates and a sweet teddy bear. Tucked under the bear was a note that read…

“Laurie,

Thank you for being like a sister to me. You are the only one close. My children are distant and my others are gone.

Love…

(Thank you, Mac)”

On his desk was a beautiful card. Later, he told me it was the last Valentine he would send to his wife. She recently passed on and, having kept all of the others through the years, he wanted to give her one last card. He planned to bundle them up and read them when he needed to remember. By now, my unshed tears were flowing.

It dawned on me that the seniors we visit have so much love and so few to share it with. I simply appear and their pent up affection is a gift freely given to us. I wish everyone could experience that!

Lilly, Ranger, Gus, Sam and I will deliver cards and treats to the front desk on Friday. Perhaps, just maybe, we will make someone feel loved…someone who deeply needs that.

We better get started on those cards!
