Day 993
Self-care is ALWAYS placed on the back burner for humans. Unlike dogs, who often unknowingly choose what is best for their health, humans prioritize differently. For me, that looks like:
1. Family
2. Dogs
3. Friends
4. Therapy Dogging
…………………
100. (Or more) Self-Care
I am chastised for this almost daily by my wonderful, loving husband and beloved children, but I explain that I am “wired” that way!!! If I place myself at the top of the list, guilt and unease are the result!
So, today, for various reasons, I put myself first. Now, it helped that #1 - #4 were pleasantly engaged without me, but I still challenged myself to choose something that would feed my soul.
That turned out to be a long walk without a leash or calendar to deal with. It was beautiful, soothing and indulgent…just what the doctor ordered. My thoughts turned to the beauty surrounding me and I only allowed positive thoughts to walk beside me.
After about 40 minutes, I turned to retrace my steps back to where I began. On the return trip, I welcomed loving thoughts of family, friends and dogs, but denied intrusive concerns over which I have no control. Calm was achieved, breathing was slowed and my smile was a constant companion.
So, I encourage you to take a few minutes out of your day to embrace YOU! It’s a challenge, but you might just arrive on the other side ready to give even more of yourself to others.
The Goldens might agree, but they are busy napping and chewing bones. They are great examples of choosing self-care!
