Day 991

Snuggling is one of the things Goldens do best! They are always touching their humans and often can be found with their furry family members as well. Sam loves to use a doggy sibling as a pillow whenever possible!

Why do we crave touch? Hugs, a hand on a shoulder or a child sitting in a lap…almost everyone enjoys a human connection!

Every morning, our Goldens have a routine that is not to be changed in any way, shape or form. First, Lilly gets a tummy rub on her cushy bed. Next, Sam is released from his kennel for a love session on the bed. Ranger is up by now and gets a back scratch. Finally, Gus leaves his bed and begins “The Car Wash.” All four Goldens parade through my legs in a Conga Line to finish the routine. It all revolves around touch.

Today, at Norbella Senior Care, we saw the ultimate in needs to touch. When I put my arm around one sweet man, he took my other hand and laid his head on my shoulder. Another dear lady took my hand with a grip that would not fade. Almost every person we visited needed touch. We could feel the tension and loneliness evaporate. Gus, our Therapy Dog today, was touched constantly and leaned into every loving gesture.

With four Goldens at my feet, it’s time to get my own fix. With no leash in my hand, I am headed to touch and be touched. That physical connection comforts, restores and calms my soul. Touch is such a gift… and it’s free!
