Day 962

Everyone loves the Christmas tree in the living room…especially Sam and Gus! Even though we have blocked off the area surrounding it and even placed fencing around the perimeter, they are relentless! They will often bring us beloved ornaments… partially chewed. It is almost as if deterring their access entices them to draw near!

Who, among us, has not been tempted to do something that is frowned upon or forbidden? Touching something hot, putting a tongue on that frozen bar or eating part of dessert that was meant for dinner guests are all examples that come to mind. Each warning was to keep us safe or protect something that could be ruined. Sometimes, when we are asked to NOT do something, the temptation becomes even more of a challenge.

Years ago, when I was still teaching, our head custodian asked me to find a fire alarm and pull it for an upcoming fire drill. I had so many years of being told, “Whatever you do, don’t EVER touch that lever unless there is a REAL fire! There I was, fingers on the lever and I could not pull it!!!! I had to find a colleague to help me do it!!! It was still a challenge!

Those forbidden temptations are usually in place to keep us safe. However, a little sliver of dessert wouldn’t be missed when the pie is served at a dinner party…right? If I get tempted, I will get permission from Sam and Gus! They will tell me to “Go for it!”
