Day 940
Due to the extreme cold, Ranger was chosen to go to Walker this morning. Lilly can’t jump into the car and Gus needed a half-bath after romping in the backyard with Sam. Some days, that is how the decision is made!
Although Lilly gets a few healthy treats when she visits, Ranger was offered a wide variety of goodies and “slopped down” each delectable morsel before anyone changed their mind! He was in Heaven!
Visiting with a newer resident, I listened to her concerns for a few moments and then steered her towards a conversation about her family. I had gone to high school with her two sons, so that was an interesting avenue to pursue. When we left, she was smiling!
Typically, I try to maneuver the topic to happy themes. The seniors are often anxious to talk about ailments and I realize that is pretty important, but I feel our visits should be more about happier subjects. They have enough time to dwell on bad health and lack of independence! I always try to get at least a smile, but laughter is even better! Ranger is good at bringing humor to any situation!
In my own life as well, it is sometimes easier to converse about health, politics, global warming or other topics that do not bring a smile to faces! My goals include uplifting conversations and avoidance of those topics that bring concern or sadness to a listening ear. If all else fails, I can always talk about my Goldens l! They always bring a smile!
