Day 921

Ranger was my companion at Norbella today and he loved every second! Along with pats, scratches and head rubs, he knows where all the treats are kept and his buddies do not disappoint!

Whenever, WHENEVER, I am with seniors, I soak in their gentle wisdom. On this day, we walked into the room of one of our favorites as she was having her nails done. Assessing the situation, Ranger and I decided to stay for a short visit. Our friend is severely disabled (wheel chair bound, limbs that won’t work well and hands that are the biggest challenge of all), but never complains! Her attitude is amazing and I have yet to hear a negative statement from her . Now, if anyone has the right to complain, it is our friend! She only wants to focus on others and speaks only kind words.

Today, I was humbled by her challenge of using her hands to play her beloved keyboard. She is currently down to only one of these appendages due to medical issues, but was working on keeping that one mobile enough to carry a tune on the keys. I told her she was one of the most upbeat, kindest people I know! Her response was beautiful…

“I know my body is a challenge, but I still have one good hand! That means the music will keep me going! As for the kindness, my mama always taught me to be kind to absolutely everyone. Even if they are unkind to you, being kind is the right thing to do. That lesson has never failed me. Kindness is what this world needs.”

She can’t walk or stand. Her hands and fingers are a challenge to control and yet, she chooses kindness instead of bitterness. What a role-model to everyone lucky enough to be in her presence!

Before we parted, she said, “I like you and look forward to our visits!”

Best compliment I have received in some time!!!

Kindness…such an easy choice for my senior friend and such a beacon for all who are lucky enough to know her!
