Day 912

Lilly was at her Happy Place this morning! Leading the way to all of her regulars, she had a smile on her face the entire time!

Walking across the skyway from building to building, we always encounter the same “gang” sitting in chairs as they watch the world outside. The standing joke is that Lilly lives in the penthouse on the (non-existing) 5th floor. We always stop for some love and a few stories from the “penthouse!”

Next, on to our beloved Sonny who greets Lilly with a treat waiting outside his door. Having adopted each other as brother/sister, we visited, helped with a few things and then took our leave. As we left, Lilly got one more treat as I got my hug. This sweet senior humbled me when he said, “You mean the world to me!” How did I get so lucky?

Stopping by a few newer residents led to a trip by the dining room. As we passed… well, Lilly stopped and refused to move… voices were heard from the kitchen. “Lilly is here!!!” Running out the door comes Lilly’s dear friend! The head cook always has a healthy treat for our girl!

Up to our precious Don (Harmonica Man) who tells a story we have never heard… his homecoming from WWII! As Lilly and I hung on every word, he described the cab ride home to his new wife. He told the cab driver to stop a couple blocks from the apartment and ran the rest of the way. Throwing the main door open, he took the steps two-at-a-time and stopped short of the last landing. There, standing at the top of the flight of stairs was his toddler son who he had never seen. The reunion went on and the love flowed! Once again I am humbled to be a part of this man’s journey!

A few more stops and finally to Lilly’s friend “Pinky.” Rumor had it that this lady had ordered a pancake for our girl. There, on a dinner plate, was a huge pancake!!! Miss Pinky fed her by hand and we enjoyed every moment (and BITE)!

It was time to go, but we knew WE were leaving with full hearts… and a full Lilly tummy! We are so blessed to share in the lives of these senior friends! They warm our hearts and remind us that in giving our time, we receive such a gift in return…love.
