Day 880

There are few places my Goldens would rather be than in the back yard! It is so seldom that I actually SIT for more than a moment or two, so it wasn’t long before all four were resting by my feet as I sat in a chair. Sun on my face and Goldens surrounding me…it doesn’t get much better than this!

As I petted first one and then another, it occurred to me that this scene replays no matter where we are. On the front porch, in the sunroom, in the living room…they are most content when they are with their humans. Their “need to be near” is humbling.

People are not so different. We all have special individuals in our lives who we want/need to be near in order to be happy. When we are separated, there is a part of us missing and our happiness is incomplete until we are reunited.

Now and then, the boys will take off at a mad romp while Lilly and I simply shake our heads. However, after a flurry of activity, they return to reconnect and need to soak in some human love.

None of us were made to be alone. We seem to crave that human interaction. Most of us have that precious circle of friends and family that bring us peace, calm and contentment. Perhaps, that is why the Goldens and I are drawn to our seniors…many of whom do not have the gift of being comforted by those they love. We can be that “group” of family/friends during our visit.

Once again, last week, our dear friend (John) looked at me and said, “I am lost… just lost.” My response was, “Ranger and I are right here to make sure that feeling goes away.” We had a lovely visit and he was smiling as we left.

Being with the ones who make us feel safe is a wonderful thing, but even better might be offering that same feeling to someone who is “lost.” My Goldens always make the world a little better place. How lucky I am to see that first hand!
