Day 877
About the only thing Lilly loves more than her friends at Walker might just be the food so freely given at the senior complex!
Lilly is on a strict diet for kidney issues with her Mama keeping CLOSE tabs on this Golden. Protein and salt are avoided, but small treats are allowed. Under Mama’s watchful eye, she pranced around gathering whatever she could get!
At her beloved Sonny’s closed door there was a treat on a napkin to welcome her! The head cook came running out with crackers! Others searched their pockets. The last stop was our dear friend, Pinky, who actually cleans out her refrigerator every Wednesday and sends her leftovers home for “The Boys” Lilly scored half a pancake there!
What is it about sharing food? It is almost a language of love! I know some of my happiest memories are sitting in my own Nanny’s kitchen as she whipped up a batch of cookies. It is also true that I enjoy cooking and baking for my own family beyond measure! Every loved one from my past, is associated with a recipe or holiday meal.
I feel bad about today’s custom of ignoring the dinner table for a “grab-and-go” or singular meal in front of a screen. The conversations we had growing up were priceless and the feeling of family unity undeniable.
So here’s to bringing back family dinners around the table so memories can be made and stories can be shared. Right now, I have a hot dish in the oven and cookies cooling on a rack! Come on over!
