Day 851
Today, I spent a concentrated time on my next book. Almost ready to click on the “save” button, I was shocked when, seemingly out of nowhere, Sammy jumped up and planted his big paws on the keyboard! My yelp could have been heard for miles! My reaction was to look at him and say, “What have you done?" My harsh tone caused a reaction that broke my heart. Not being one to raise my voice often, Sammy cowered at my feet begging for forgiveness. No amount of erased typing was worth hurting that puppy’s heart!
Immediately, I gathered him up and told him how sorry I was. All he really wanted was attention and love…poor buddy. He forgave me instantly and is now attached to my leg!
When we react on a visceral level, we often cause hurt to those in the direct line of fire. Although it can’t always be helped, a breath or two could save so many hearts from hurting. We all know the feeling of being on the receiving end of such an exchange and it is painful.
I, for one, am adding this onto my list of “being a kinder person." Along with taking a couple deep breaths, I often wear a “Kindness Ring” on one of my thumbs. It is there to remind me to choose kind words and actions. I honestly forgot to put it on today!
I will be heading upstairs in a moment to grab that ring and Sam will be invited to join me for some extra “Mommy Time." Precious boy… dogs don’t need to wear thumb (dew claw) rings. Their entire being is already kind. I still strive to be more like my Goldens each and every day.
