Day 805
All of my Goldens LOVE rewards! Sometimes, they take the form of treats, but often they are just as happy with affection. That is except for Mr. Ranger! Ranger wants treats!
This boy has cracked the code on the treat dispenser… namely Mommy! He positions himself in places where it is easier to lure him out with a treat. For example, when it is time to shower, our boy plants himself in the bathroom and blocks the shower door! A treat is his only language!
Everyone enjoys being rewarded for positive behavior. Like I now do with the Goldens, I tried to offer positivity when wearing my teacher, parent, daughter, friend or any other hat I donned. For the most part, positive reinforcement worked, but there comes a time when the other party has to realize that their actions will not always get them a treat. This transition can be a tough one!
Extrinsic rewards are great for the “building blocks” portion of behavior development, but there is a point when that needs to morph into intrinsic rewards. Some might call it maturing, but I call it self-worth.
In a world where fewer and fewer people feel pride in their work ethic, I admire those who still “do their best” because that brings them inner-satisfaction. People from all walks of life still believe that a job well done is crucial to their happiness and self-esteem.
The question arises as to HOW we instill that in individuals. My own theory for two and four-legged alike is to start with extrinsic rewards and wean towards intrinsic ones. Every journey is unique, but, in a perfect world, all adults would feel good about their contribution to society and that would be reward enough!
As for sweet Ranger, I have created the monster and now I must pay the price in doggy treats. At least, I am proud to say, I now break them in half! Baby steps…baby steps!
