Day 774

Even though Lilly will warn Sam to behave around her, when they are resting they will sometimes touch paws for comfort. It warms my heart!

Today, Miss Lilly and I headed over to Norbella to visit some of our favorite seniors. In Memory Care, almost every resident reached out to touch her soft fur. Some stoked her head or back for minutes at a time. You could almost see the calm descend on their faces. As they touched my Golden Girl, I would often gently touch their shoulder, back or arm. I could almost feel them leaning in to the connection that was offered. Most everyone needs to feel that human touch.

There have been times in my life when a hug, an arm around my shoulders or a hand holding mine, has made my world feel less "out of control." There is something about that genuinely, affectionate offering that means so very much. It is hard to feel completely alone when someone is offering a gentle touch. Knowing my response to touch has been pivotal in my own interactions with others.

A number of years ago, Ranger and I were walking through the halls at Mercy Hospital when I saw a staff member leaning against the wall. Her body was shaking with sobs and I had to make a decision. Should I respect her privacy or offer some human and Golden love? For me, there is only one choice...always choose the kind reaction. We moved forward and I gently placed my hand on her shoulder with Ranger close at hand. I recall her taking his big head in her hands and then she turned to me. Her reaction was so sweet as she recognized me as her teacher from long ago and came in for a full hug. We still remain close to this day.

There are those who do not react well to touch and I respect that. Fortunately, the Goldens and I can usually tell that these individuals need space and visit from a distance. Often, when these visits progress, many warm up and allow an interaction with the dogs. Those Goldens are pure magic!

Never be afraid to reach out and physically connect with those who may be hurting...you will soften their pain. Somehow, my Goldens were born with that gift and they freely offer their love to others.
