Day 688

Last night, I was able to FaceTime with Lilly's favorite person. When she heard Jimmy's voice, she sauntered over to investigate. Lying down at my feet, she looked up expectantly, at the phone. On a whim, I placed the phone between her front paws so she could actually see her human! Tail wagging, head cocked, she enjoyed her visit immensely!

Phones have been a part of my entire life, but I have certainly witnessed a transformation over the years! When I was young, we were on a party line of three. There was a certain ring for each family, but often you would hear the tell-tale click of an 'eavesdropper' as one party happened to be in her 80's. Evidently, it was great entertainment for her and we didn't mind!

Next came the "wall phone." Being tethered to the plaster, the cord could only reach so far. Homework dates, family/friend calls and boyfriends would dial our number and hope the lottery landed in their favor. Without caller ID, one never knew who was apt to answer!

Landlines were joined by cell phones with the former soon becoming dinosaurs. Now, with ZOOM, FaceTime and beyond, we live in a world akin to The Jetsons! The other day, the car phone sent a call to my watch, so I became Captain Kirk for a time as I visited with my wrist!

This morning, I was unable to visit Walker with Lilly, so the two of us made a few calls to individuals who really needed our love today. On the last call, I placed the phone on speaker mode so Lilly could hear her beloved centurion as we visited. The moment she heard his voice, her tail began to wag! As Lilly listened, we walked down Memory Lane, got the update on families and, as any good Minnesotans would do, chatted about the weather. As we wound down in Minnesota Style (at least 10 minutes), I told Mr. Don how much he is loved. His words..."I don't know about that, but my mother always told me to be nice and share a smile with everyone you meet. Suddenly, you discover you have a new friend!"

My lesson for the day.

Although the phone was our avenue of visiting today, it seemed to work. Connecting, whether by greeting card, phone, text, email or in-person still warms the heart. If I doubted that, I would just have to recall Lilly's wagging tail and I know it is true.
