Day 631
What's in a name? Perhaps more than we realize. For the Goldens, they recognize their name and will respond when called. Actually, one of my favorite things to do is whisper their names, when they are resting in a pack, and watch them turn their heads to look at me. The expressions of love are priceless and I melt with each glance.
For humans, it seems to be just as important. Hearing your name, depending on the inflection, gets an immediate reaction. Whether loving, stern, questioning or filled with angst, we respond accordingly. Names are such a part of our lives.
It always warms my heart when someone remembers my name and uses it to welcome or connect with me. It is a feeling of acknowledgement, importance and appreciation that someone thought you were special enough to be remembered.
My memory for names has never been stellar. My brain seems to focus on the actual meeting and overload on the moment at hand. I can meet someone new, have a lovely conversation, walk away and have no recollection of the person's name! The chance of seeing them again is rather sizable, so the realization hit that this might be an area needing improvement.
Using many tricks from many books, there has been some success in this memory game. We meet so many people during our Therapy Dog visits, walks and life in general, but that is no excuse!
Today, for example, I finally asked the crossing guards about their names. They know my dogs by sight and use their names every day. I needed to return that gift. All six names are locked in and I will use them with every crossing..
Seniors, educators, staff and daily walkers all need to hear their names. Out of respect, and to make this world a little bit more connected, the goal of using names is worth the mental gymnastics. Seeing faces light up when they hear their name makes it a special day indeed!
So, if we see you out-and-about, expect a greeting with your name included! It is such a simple, genuine way to make a person feel worthwhile and honored. As for dogs, I have those names down without a challenge. Go figure!
