Day 588
The gifts are opened, the fine china gently washed and put away and another Christmas is placed in our Memory Book. It was a beautiful day with family at the table and hopeful Goldens beneath. This holiday holds such a glorious place in my heart...family, faith, giving and love.
The Big White House was so full of joy, lights, good food and family on this day. When there was a moment to catch my breath, I would grab the closest Golden to hug and try to freeze the wonderful happenings flying by way too fast. I love the preparation, the decorating, the lights and the gatherings. Each year, although different, is treasured for the memories that hold their own unique charm.
In younger years, the relatives would all gather at our house for dinner and fight over the best piece of our beloved Nanny's German coffee cake. After the last guest had left, it would be time for a yearly ritual that still holds such a beautiful place in my heart. My dear, dear friend, Marlene, would hop in the car as we headed over to the skating rink in town. Donning our blades, we headed out in the silent darkness to skate around the rink and share tales of our day. It was a memory that remains as clear as if we just returned from our annual jaunt. Thank you, Mar.
Fast forward to my own children flying down the stairs to see what Santa had left by the fireplace. Those memories are some of my most cherished. Seeing the excitement and joy on those faces remains imprinted in my memories. Children at Christmas define the joy of the holiday with their squeals of delight and belief in the magic of the season.
Parents and grandparents are also a huge part of my Christmas memories...each passing year more precious than the last...I feel their presence as we gather. Oh, for a few minutes to share this day with them. What a gift that would be.
Searching my heart for the true beauty of Christmas, I find that love is at the center of it all. Love of family (past and present) is the artist painting every part of the holiday portrait. The gifts, the gatherings, the laughter, the hugs and simply being together...those are the true gifts of Christmas at The Big White House.
Now, I am going to find my Goldens and make sure they are enjoying their presents. When I scratch each one behind the ears, I plan to reminisce about the day and record this year's moments in my heart.
Merry Christmas everyone! You all make my life more beautiful!
