Day 564

Now and then I take the Goldens down to the river for their walks. Sam, being our baby, has not been down there very often. When we veered from our usual path, he was beyond curious and excited. Although his eyes and ears were working overtime, it was his nose that got the real workout! He must have stopped 100 times to take a whiff of "something" amazing! It was a great walk!

Most of us are creatures of habit. I know my morning and nighttime rituals are incredibly rigid and regimented. Even the Goldens' morning routine is sacred to them. If we make one misstep, confusion reigns! Habits can be productive and time-saving, but they might also be anti-creative.

When our daily walk led us down a different path, the dogs were so engaged with the experience. Taking our regular jaunt has all of them knowing just when to turn the corner, sniff the best light pole and where all the neighboring dogs live. Of course, there is something to be said for predictability, but the element of change can be good for the spirit now and then.

On our detour, I found myself more entuned to my surroundings as well. It was not an unknown journey, but my concentration on the lovely sights and sounds was heightened and the unexpected nature of the path was enjoyed immensely!

In life, it seems like a good thing when you veer off course now and then. Take a different road in the car or a different path on your walk. It might just take your mind further from the mundane of everyday to the potential of change. Even though the destination might be the same, Robert Frost would agree to choose "the road less traveled," You never know what you might be missing!
