Day 515

"Belonging," in my humble opinion, is a vital human need. We belong to families, neighborhoods, work venues and so many other groups. What are the benefits of being a member?

Today, Lilly and I had the joy of visiting seniors over the bridge in Champlin. We have not been members of that community for long, but today's welcome was warm and wonderful. As we entered, we were greeted by many and some even knew our names. Going deeper into the facility, there were requests and gratitude for our visit there. We suddenly 'belonged' and it felt great!

On our way home, my amazing chauffeur (Mac) dropped me off at Walker for a sing-a-long in Memory Care. While he escorted Lilly home, I entered and found a warm welcome with most asking, "Where is your dog?" or "Why isn't Lilly here?" I felt like I belonged.

In Memory Care, I was greeted by my dear Harmonica Man AND some residents. It seems that I "belonged" with or without my leash!

Being accepted and welcomed is an incredible feeling. It feeds the soul with warmth, validation and self-worth. To be part of a group helps define one's direction in life. It also lets you know that others care and want you to be a part of their world.

There are many groups that I cherish in my life...some of them are because of my Goldens. All of them help make my life's journey richer and more meaningful. One gentleman, sitting in his wheelchair with Lilly's head in his lap, said it best, "Thank you for coming to visit. It means the world to me to have you here with me now! I look forward to your visits more than you know!" At that moment, I felt warmth and validation fill my heart. We "belonged" and knew we were right where we needed to be.
