Day 489

There is an old expression which has been used by people for decades..."I've got your back." For my Goldens, it is a throwback to their 'wolfy ancestors' who would lie down back-to-back so they could see approaching predators. Our pups can often be found in this canine position.

Historically, the expression dates back to WWll when soldiers would run into battle with their backs exposed. Fellow military comrades would protect them as they ran forward. Such an interesting and noble origin for this phrase.

Having "someone's back" carries a weight of responsibility that cannot be ignored. When a friend counts on you, there is a chance that you might lose their trust if you let them down. Of course, there are always legitimate reasons for a lapse of loyalty, but true friends will always set the bar high to be there when needed.

In my lifetime, there have been a few individuals who consistently support me through thick and thin. By protecting my heart, these treasured friends allow me to feel safe enough to take a breath and plot a positive course of action. In turn, it is an honor to protect their backs as well.

Whether it is humans or pups, the concept of defending a loved one's back seems to be a lovely survival technique. Although we don't have to fend off saber-toothed tigers in the neighborhood, it certainly is lovely when my Goldens snuggle up with their back against me. It is an honor to be one of the pack. As they find security in my presence, I know they would always have my back as well.
