Day 481

According to Goldens, "The grass is always greener..." might just be their motto! These three had just been enjoying time on the balcony with their Mama. As I moved towards the stairs to grab a cup of coffee, the sliding door was meant to be a brief barrier. After begging to follow me out on the deck, now they were determined to retreat.

The concept of things being better that are out of reach to their furry faces is a constant dilemma.

*"The bone you are chewing is better than mine!"

*"You are getting your ears scratched and I am not!"

*"That dog food bowl looks fuller than mine!"

*"That toy is better than mine!"

*"You found the best patch of sunshine, so move over!"

*"Why do you get a bigger treat than I do?"

This list could go on ALL DAY times four! All of our Goldens constantly look to their siblings and want what they have. Humans are not far behind.

When I was younger, there were times when someone's life looked more exciting or colorful than my own. I would take a moment to ponder their good fortune and then shake it off...just like my pups. As the years went by, I realized every life has enticing visions on the surface, but everyone has a less exciting reality lurking beneath the smooth waters. That is just life.

As I thought back on my pups looking like they wanted to get back through the doors, I realized they were really desiring something else...their human. With dogs, the grass is the greenest where their loved ones are. Even though it may appear that they are dissatisfied with the status quo and desire what is out of reach, perhaps it is always the need to be where the love and security lives. The same might just be true for people. All we really want is love and acceptance.

For my Goldens, this philosophy is true about 90% of the time. The other 10% is focused on food, bone, treats and toys. Not a lot to ask when the love they offer back is 100%!
