Day 425
The other day, I noticed a number of people commented on Lilly's beautiful face while they petted her. I never quite know how to respond, because I am not responsible for that pretty "mug". I usually thank them and move the conversation along. She does have the countenance of an angel, but she has absolutely no knowledge of that opinion at all!
That thought made me wonder about physical beauty. What makes something, or someone, pleasing to the eye? The structure, lines, color or movement of an object/person? Perhaps it is the familiar we seek as we gaze. Try as I might, my attempts to pin down the specifics of beauty were not within my grasp.
Inner beauty is easier to define. Kindness, giving, loving, caring and other attributes come to mind for humans. Even though someone might not display society's concept of current "beauty", grace and goodness so often shine through to make a person truly beautiful.
At the cottage this weekend, my sweet husband asked where we could hang a mirror in the newly converted bathroom. Thinking of Lilly and inner beauty, I replied, "We probably don't actually need one". With Lilly as a model, I think I will check to make the inner-self more pleasing to others. You don't need a physical mirror for that... only the smiles that radiate back when you try to make the world a better place.
