Day 382
Sam has his first experience with Pelican Lake this afternoon. Initially, he was less than thrilled with those lapping waves ready to devour his paws! They would sweep towards him and he would jump away with all four paws leaving the sand. This dance went on for some time until big brother, Ranger, walked right in...leaving a wake behind for good measure. Sam observed Ranger and finally decided it was safe to venture into the scary stuff. It didn't take him long to figure out that he was born for this!!!
"Mom" wasn't too thrilled when, leading Ranger out for 'last call' before bed, both pups shoved the door open and took off like they were running in the Kentucky Derby! Honestly, I thought we had the "COME" command firmly rooted, but not at the lake! Tearing after them, as I watched them head for the dock, all I could think of was to bribe them. Promising treats at the top of my lungs, Sam immediately turned and ran my way! Gus had other plans.
That naughty guy stood on the dock and tried to stare me down! Not to be outdone, I turned on my heel and ran...yes ran...like there was a herd of bison closing the gap! Reaching the porch, I glanced back and saw that Gus was slowly walking in my direction. When I hid behind the corner, and he could no longer see me, he ran like a gazelle! We all made it safely inside! Whew!
Two lessons were relearned today. Modeling behavior can be very powerful (especially if it is your beloved older brother) and the pups will follow when there is a real fear of losing their human. Lessons I knew by heart when I taught elementary students!
Well, all four are at my feet sleeping. I envision their dreams looking something like this:
Ranger: I could swim forever in this lake! Wait! Was that a tennis ball? Life just got better!
Lilly: I know the doctor ordered me to rest and heal. After seeing those young rascals do an out-take from "The Great Escape," I may try my paw at that!
Gus: I am free!!!! I am free!!! Wait... where's Mommy!!!! I'm coming!
Sam: I will follow the one having the most fun! Hopefully, they will head for the "wet place!" If not, I hope there are treats!
Good night from Pelican! Sweet dreams and don't forget to chase those dreams... just like Gus and Sam!
