Day 339
4/20/23
Trust is a gift between two hearts. It can be quite fragile as a relationship blossoms, but forms a solid foundation once it stands the test of time.
My Goldens' trust in me humbles my heart each and every day. Without any verbal communication, they simply know I will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Even when I inadvertently let them down, they still place their confidence and love in my hands.
Of course, with trust comes the possibility of betrayal. When I look back on life, those people have been few and far between. It doesn't dull the pain when our trust in someone is lost, but it makes other loyal people more precious.
The other day, a new, younger friend asked the question, "How do you know when you can truly trust someone?". I had to ponder that for a moment. Of course, the easy response would have been that you just know. If that were the case, nobody would ever need to deal with betrayal.
When I finally answered, I said, "It's a feeling, deep in your soul. It starts out as a small flame and, eventually, builds into a roaring fire. Rarely, that flame can be diminished by betrayal, but it usually grows with each encounter. When you find those friends who have never let you down, hang on tight to that trust. It is a rare gift and, like a fire, needs to be tended. Always cherish it and never take it for granted."
Today, Ranger and I read with our young readers at elementary school. There were a few interruptions, a number of unexpected happenings and many small hands that simply reached out to touch my big Golden's head. Throughout the time we were there, Ranger stayed right beside me, often resting his head on my foot. Now that's trust...knowing I would not allow anything to disrupt his happiness.
