Day 303
3/15/23
We are so very proud of our Gus for completing Obedience 1 last week! "Little" Sammy is following in his brother's pawprints and has only two classes left before he graduates! For me, it is fascinating how two Goldens, from the same home, with the same treats, and the same trainer, can produce such different outcomes in the ring!
Sam is confident, but so very interested in all the other doggy classmates. Gus is shy and timid, but gives me his best attention...even though he is terrified of the other dogs in his class.
Both boys had a lesson which introduced a "Safe Mat." When the command is given to "Go to your mat," the desired result is a speedy bolt to their safe place. Of course, there are many treats involved in this exercise and much praise when they touch their mat, but I DO see progress with our quest!
I started to think about my own "Safe Mat" in the human world. It took me a moment, but I realized there are places I go to reflect and find peace. My dad's armchair makes me feel safe. The sun room in our home is a refuge of light and comfort. I am also drawn to read in the big bay window overlooking the front yard. There are other places, but they all have a common element. I can be there and let down my guard.
There are people who could also be referred to as my "Safe Mat". Treasured friends and a few family members are included in this collection of safety. (Of course, my Goldens are high on that list!.) When I am with them, they create an aura of safety, calm and love. With these precious people (and pups), I can also let my guard down and simply be myself. In this day and age, what a true gift that is!
We will keep working on the "Safe Mat" for all of my Goldens. If is works, I will let you know! As for me, I will continue to seek out safe places and people who allow me to relax and escape the loud confusion of life. Of course, there will always be a Golden at my feet!
