Day 220
12/21/22
Minnesotans know about snow and blizzards! Growing up in this climate prepares you for anything cold...we simply don't know any better! Yesterday, we witnessed swarms of people gassing up their cars, filling their grocery carts and making sure their shovels and scrapers were at the ready! The weather lived up to the predictions. Cold, snow and wind were on the menu for the day!
Planning to stay put and, perhaps make a pot of soup and some oatmeal bread, the pups, Mac and I were ready to snuggle in and enjoy the beautiful display presented by Mother Nature. Well, the soup and bread were made, but the "snuggle in" part was rather lacking.
The Goldens LOVE the snow, so one of the humans in the house has to be the door person for the doggy door which leads to the backyard. In and out (mostly Gus and Sam), in and out, wipe the fur, scoop out the snowballs from their paws and sweep up the snow from the kitchen floor was an hourly event. As long as they don't get too cold, I am all for the exercise!
Added to the swinging door, we drove a friend to and from dialysis when no ride was available. We also made a trip to pick up some RX for a dear lady who is house-bound, picked up our grandson from school and delivered some homemade chicken soup to a needy friend. (Jimmy and Mac were right there to help!) Even though a day in front of the fire with a good book sounded pretty enticing, interacting with friends in need was even better.
Being needed is such a gift. It gives me a sense of purpose, keeps me busy and warms my heart. I often visit with elders who are not needed like they once were. These dear seniors know that their time to help has seemingly passed. They talk about having nothing to offer anymore and it breaks my heart. My response is always, "I need you! Now, you give me your wisdom, stories and caring heart." The truth is, I do. I need to be needed, as I believe we all do. Giving and helping fills the heart with such warmth.
On a stormy Minnesota winter day, such as the one we had today, you tend to count your blessings. We are warm, together and healthy. Heading out to help a couple of people in need, only to return to our cozy home, intensified my gratitude. Also, as an added benefit, we are always greeted by four frantically wagging tails! Life is good!
FYI: The bandanas are a gift from Old Barkers! We all love that place AND Charlean!
