Day 205

12/6/22

This boy, and all my Goldens, are true gifts to everyone they encounter. Ranger stole the spotlight today while at Mercy Hospital. We are so very lucky to be surrounded by the wonderful staff each time we visit.

Today, we had a request to head on up to 4 Heart. Typically, we are directed to see a patient or family in the waiting area. However, today, when we stepped off the elevator, the charge nurse immediately announced that Ranger was on the floor. She then handed us a gift for our sweet boy. Monogrammed bandana, treat jar and key chain were all part of the offering. I was humbled, to say the least.

When I say the staff at the hospital is amazing, I am not only talking about the excellent care they provide for the patients and families. These people have hearts of gold and give so much of those wonderful hearts to those they serve.

After receiving his gifts, Ranger and I headed over to calm a family who was waiting for their loved one to turn the corner and start to improve after surgery. We spent some time with them and Ranger worked his magic.

Next, we headed through the doors to ask if anyone could use a Therapy Dog visit. We were directed to two rooms where Ranger made instant friends. One gentleman was heading home to his own golden retriever while another man shared pictures of his 131 pound, 90% wolf "dog." When we left each room, the smiles were thanks enough!

What I really noticed today, however, were the interactions between Ranger and the staff. Being at nearly full capacity, the stress has to be intense. Having said that, almost every person in uniform we passed today, stopped what they were doing and shared some love with Ranger. Many told us that the staff needs the Therapy Dogs almost more than the patients.

I get to see these wonderful hospital personnel give their "all" to their patients while still maintaining their positive attitude. So many of them thank us for what we do. I always respond by reminding them that we get to watch hospital heroes saving lives, easing pain and sharing smiles and love each time we visit. What a noble profession...and Ranger is right there to make their days better (he also doesn't mind all the love and scratches!)!
