Day 177 Pt. 2
11/8/22
Why is three an awkward number for a social group? Watching Gus, Lilly and Ranger interact, it doesn't hold true in the dog world. I have never seen them ostracize one of the others. What a beautiful trait!
I have been the "third thumb" on a number of occasions. Often, the twosome involved doesn't even realize the social blunder, but it is hurtful nonetheless.
As an educator, I witnessed many a tearful reaction to a threesome playing on the playground. Second graders are still somewhat narcissistic at that age and empathy does not abound. It is a teachable situation when feelings are hurt in this way.
Taking the three aside, I would ask why one was crying. When the child would explain that they felt left out, the other two would often be bewildered. With role playing, sharing and more than a few hugs, things would usually get better...though not always.
Humans have the capacity to empathize, but it is something often ignored. If everyone practiced being empathetic, I believe the world would be a better place indeed.
As for the Goldens, they can't understand WHY someone is sad, but they can FEEL the sorrow. These pups respond with love, affection and acceptance. If only we could be more Golden in our response to others...
As for me, I continue to become more empathetic simply by being in their beautiful presence. They continue to make me a better person.
